Is the newly released Samsung Galaxy S20 a compelling reason to switch from your iPhone? In a word, no. My personal experience with both the iPhone X and Samsung Note 8 sheds light on why sticking with your current device might be the smarter choice.
iPhone X: A Lasting Investment
Currently, my device lineup consists of an iPhone X and a Samsung Note 8. The iPhone X continues to impress me, running the latest operating system and operating just as smoothly after almost two years of use. This device has remained a faithful companion, maintaining its high performance without any noticeable degradation. It's a testament to Apple's engineering and design that a device can endure such prolonged use without necessitating a replacement.
Samsung Note 8: Issues and Troubles
In stark contrast, my Samsung Note 8 has become more of a hindrance than a help. The device often hangs and runs on Android 8, despite the availability of an update to Android 9. However, updating the device to the latest software version proves challenging. The phone was purchased in the US while I live in India, and it comes with a bizarre restriction: it can only be updated on the US network. This is the most absurdity I’ve ever encountered in smartphone functionality. The Note 8's inability to receive timely updates stands as a glaring reminder of the importance of timely software updates for maintaining a device's performance and security.

Both the iPhone X and Samsung Note 8 were released at around the same time, priced approximately in the same range. However, the iPhone X has stood the test of time far better than its Android counterpart. While the phone retains its appeal and functionality after two years, the Note 8 has become frustrating due to its outdated software and usability issues. It's this stark contrast that prompts us to question whether new Samsung Galaxy models offer the upgrade experience we might be seeking.
Alternative Thought: Google Pixel
Even if new Samsung models did present an attractive upgrade option, the Google Pixel series is worth considering for its exceptional performance and software updates. Google's commitment to regular and timely updates ensures that the Pixel devices remain at the forefront of the Android ecosystem. However, the Pixel series also comes with its limitations, such as the lack of large screen size and a few other features that some users might find desirable.
Concluding Thoughts
Despite the allure of new technology and the latest features offered by new Samsung Galaxy models, the practical and real-world experiences from my current devices show that making the leap to a new phone might not be worth it. The iPhone X's enduring performance and the Pixel's commitment to software updates make them both compelling options. Until a new Samsung model reshapes this narrative, sticking with your current device might be the better choice.
