Optimal Locations for Flying Drones

If you are new to drone flying or an experienced enthusiast looking for the best places to race and fly with FPV goggles, it's essential to find the right venue to ensure safety and enjoyment. This article explores different locations that are ideal for drone flying, including organized groups, parks, schoolyards, and your own yard or neighborhood.

Organized Groups and Venues

If you want to race with FPV goggles or fly in an organized environment, find a local group or club. Participating in such groups can introduce you to proper drone flying venues and provide safety in numbers. These venues often have experienced drone flyers who will monitor the area and ensure no accidents occur.

Parks for Drone Flying

Public parks are great locations for drone flying, especially in suburban areas. However, it’s crucial to choose a less crowded park to avoid disturbing other park-goers. In our fair city and suburbs, many parks serve as ideal locations. For instance, a nearby park with three soccer fields and a large parking lot is mostly empty or nearly so. The park itself spans about 40 acres with half of it being heavily wooded, providing numerous opportunities for various drone activities.

Drones can be used for mapping purposes, practicing 3D imaging, and conducting Litchi missions (8-9 minute drone flights). The park's manager, who was chalk-lining a soccer field, referred us to a larger park situated far out in our county, designated for big events. This park covers 80 acres, largely open with plenty of roads and creeks.

School Yards for Drone Flying

For those eager to utilize school buildings for 3D mapping and demonstrations, consider flying in school yards. It's important to be aware of when the school is closed as this period offers a more peaceful environment. When my neighbor complained about my drone flying near his house, I showed him the video, which only captured the tops of trees, and the responding officer advised him that he could be cited for lying. Additionally, there are nearby schools where flying would be allowed during closed hours.

Personal Locations for Drone Flying

Flying in your own yard or neighborhood can be a great option, especially if you have a quiet drone like the Mavic Pro or Platinum with quieter propellers. In our area, if you keep your drone below 300 feet and move it consistently, it's unlikely to be noticed. Additionally, the trees and creek in your yard can provide challenging terrains for practicing ATTI mode and flying under structures like roofs or eaves.

Indoor Drone Flying: Tello and Mini Drones

For beginners, indoor flying with a Tello or other miniature drones is a fantastic way to learn and fine-tune your skills. FPV goggles can be helpful for learning to fly, although they are not essential for everyone. Set up small courses between objects, both to and from you, and practice flying in ATTI mode with the drone aimed directly at you.

By carefully choosing the right venue and taking the necessary precautions, you can enjoy safe and fulfilling drone flying experiences whether you're in a public park, a schoolyard, or even your own backyard.
