Nikon D5200 and AF-P Lenses: Compatibility and Features

Does the Nikon D5200 Support AF-P Lenses?

Yes, the Nikon D5200 does support AF-P lenses. However, it's important to note that while the camera can physically mount and use AF-P lenses, autofocus performance may vary. AF-P lenses utilize a stepper motor, which results in quieter and smoother focusing, especially beneficial for video recording. Ensure your camera's firmware is up to date for optimal compatibility and performance with these lenses.

Compatibility with Nikon D5200

After carefully considering the concerns of many photographers, I decided to take a risk and purchase the AF-P DX 70–300 ED VR Nikon lens for my Nikon D5200. I was worried about compatibility issues, but thanks to Amazon's return policy, I was able to test this lens risk-free. After using it, I can confirm that it works perfectly with my camera. Ensure your camera's firmware is up to date, as Nikon has stated that you can use AF-P lenses, although some features may not be fully utilized.

Example of AF-P Lens Usage

To demonstrate the autofocus functionality, I took several photos in different shooting modes. In manual mode without manual focus correction and at maximum zoom, the resulting image was blurred.

When using auto mode with the autofocus option in the camera and at maximum zoom, the result was a clear image. Additionally, auto-focus is extremely fast and smooth. In manual mode with auto-focus, I increased the shutter speed to differentiate it from the other two photos and at maximum zoom, the result was clear for auto-focus, but with low light conditions.

These results illustrate that you can use AF-P lenses in any mode you desire, whether in manual or auto focus. AF-P lenses do not have the auto-manual focus and VR on-off switches that are found in AF-S lenses. Auto-focus is the only auto-function available, and vibration reduction (VR) is always on while using the lens. Whether or not you need to disable vibration reduction is a matter of personal preference, as it is on by default. Therefore, there is no real loss of functionality for those who do not need to disable VR.

Conclusion

Based on my experience, AF-P lenses are totally okay to use with the Nikon D5200, especially with firmware version C 1.03. This lens performs well in various shooting conditions.
