My Journey Through Analog and Digital Photography: From Point Shoot to Mirrorless Cameras

My passion for photography has taken me on a journey from the days of film cameras to the age of digital photography. Along the way, I've owned and used a wide array of lenses and camera bodies, from the iconic EOS M50 to my series of compact point-and-shoot cameras like the PowerShot G9 X Mark II and SX730 HS. Yes, they are all made by Canon.

Defining Your Photography with Film Cameras

Film cameras have their own unique charm and embodiment of traditional craftsmanship. Among my collection, the Rolleiflex SL 35 E has always been a favorite. As a 35mm SLR, it offers an incredible lens system. The Zeiss Ikon Contax IIa is another standout, a fantastic 35mm rangefinder that outshines the Contax II. My first serious 35mm SLR was the Pentax MX, which remains a memorable cornerstone of early photography adventures.

Exploring Medium Format Cameras

For those seeking something more substantial, the Minolta XD-11 is the world's first multi-mode 35mm SLR packed into a compact body, making it a great choice. Next up, the Rollei 35, a perfect blend of portability and powerful lens. The Kodak Retina series represents excellent German design paired with technologically advance lenses that performed admirably in extreme environments like Mount Everest. The Zeiss Ikon Contaflex TLR stands as a classic medium format twin-lens reflex, exuding elegance and utility. The Zeiss Ikon Tenax II offers a square format with outstanding optics. For those who enjoy larger formats but need portability, the Rolleiflex SL66 is a standout. And for those with a true penchant for old-world charm, the Zeiss Ikon Mess Ikonta 524/16 provides square-format 6x6 images with excellent coated optics.

Embracing Digital Photography

As the age of digital photography dawned, I embraced a plethora of modern devices. The Sony A7 II impressed me with its excellent resolution, although its size is slightly shorter and caters to older lenses with adapters. The Sony NEX-7 is a standout, with smaller size and impeccable image quality for older lenses as well. Another legendarily diminutive camera, the Olympus Pen E-PL1, was my first mirrorless camera and still produces top-notch photos. The Pentax K10D, an older model with decent performance, provides the flexibility of using any K-mount lens and adding screw mount lenses with adaptors.
