How Writers View Their Readers: A Perspective Beyond Protagonist Appeal

Among the myriad of muses that inspire writers, the readers often find themselves at the heart of the literary journey. How do writers see their readers, and what drives their choice of protagonists?

The Role of Open-Mindedness in Literature

Reflecting on this, I view my readers as open-minded individuals with a desire or interest in understanding the perspectives of under-represented individuals. This mindset is crucial as it opens up the possibility of diverse storytelling and character development. As a writer, my primary goal is not to identify highly relatable protagonists but rather to write authentically about individuals who are often overlooked or marginalized in mainstream literature.

Staying True to Character Choice

One of the significant hurdles in the professional literary space is the tendency to trend chase. I don’t often conform to what is currently trending. Instead, I focus on writing for the characters and stories that resonate with my own experiences and passions. These characters often belong to the LGBTQ community and others with specific mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, addiction, autism, and anxiety. Their backgrounds are marked by complex and often traumatic experiences like broken families, abuse, and religious trauma.

It is important to note that while I write with authenticity, I understand the challenge of these characters finding their way into the mainstream. For instance, gay, suicidal, trauma-ridden, and addiction-stricken individuals often struggle to find a place in the good graces of local women's book clubs. The protagonist who represents these backgrounds is often seen as hard to relate to, making it difficult for these characters to find an audience.

Linking with Readers: A Rare Treasure

While my characters may not always be easy to see oneself in, the connection that my readers feel can be profound. There are times when a reader will write to me, saying that my work affected them deeply. These emails are the most significant testament to the impact of the writer’s work. Such interactions are rare but incredibly meaningful.

For every piece of feedback, no matter how small, I take pride in it because it demonstrates the emotional resonance of my writing. The readers who connect with my work are precious, and for them, I am deeply grateful. Even if my readership is small, the sense of fulfillment and purpose remains undiminished.
